The Lake Area Outdoor Classroom was featured at the IAN (Iowa
Association of Naturalists) Fall Workshop at Lime Creek. Todd Von
Ehwegen, Cerro Gordo CCB and Susan Boatman of Clear Lake Schools presented
the session "Nature on the Playground."
November 15, 2003
Clear Lake’s Trees Forever and Natural Plus joined with the Outdoor
Classroom to reconstruct the tree line east of the pond. Community
members, students and adults, planted native species: white pine,
basswood linden, red-twig dogwood, and high bush cranberry. A $700
donation from Trees Forever made this project possible.
November 12, 2003
Friends of the Lake Area Outdoor Classroom are kicking off their annual
membership drive this month with the unveiling of a new logo. A
senior communications major at Waldorf College in Forest City, has created
a striking new logo for the group featuring the focal point for the classroom—trumpeter
swans.
November 3, 2003
A retired teacher and her husband installed shepherds’ crooks and
bird feeders outside classroom windows. Individual classes will
be responsible to keep the feeders full during the winter months.
Bags of bird seed will be welcomed as a donation.
June 2, 2003
An aspiring Eagle Scout worked with school children, Natural Plus, and
community members to refurbish the wood chip trails. Students hauled
and applied chips with ice cream buckets
May 12, 2003
Prairie forbs were planted by school children and community members.
A grant from the DNR made this planting possible.
Future Plans:
-Rip-rap the island to minimize erosion
-Install a working windmill on site for a water source and
running water
-Conduct a spring burn for the middle prairie portion |
